About

Flowers and birds have long been traditional themes in Asian art. They function as symbols of the cyclical renewal of the natural world, as metaphors for the political and social world when direct criticism was too dangerous, and as beautiful subject matter in and of itself. This exhibition includes paintings and decorative art, and shows continuity and comparisons over time and across media in Japanese art.
