About

This exhibition showcases diverse highlights from the museum's photography collection, tracing the medium's history as a visual art form. Rarely seen nineteenth-century masterworks by William Henry Fox Talbot, Gustave Le Gray, and Charles Aubry are complemented by an array of modern and contemporary works, including recent acquisitions by artists such as Charles Marville, Florence Henri, Roy DeCarava, Hiroh Kikai, and Joachim Koester. The centerpiece of the installation is a group of works by Alfred Stieglitz (American, 1864–1946) and Dorothy Norman (American, 1905–1997) reflecting their creative exchange in the 1930s and 1940s, which led Mrs. Norman to help found the Alfred Stieglitz Center at the Philadelphia Museum of Art in 1968 through the gift of her extraordinary collection.
