Fall/Winter 1991

Man's Suit: Jacket and Pants

During the 1980s the triumvirate of Japanese fashion designers-Yohji Yamamoto, Rei Kawakubo, and Issey Miyake-were lauded for their antiestablishment aesthetic. Yohji's minimalist designs emphasized cut, form, and silhouette. His menswear line, launched in 1984, bridged the avant-garde with classic tailoring. His fall/winter 1991 collection featured perfectly cut suits such as this one in dark indigo blue, a key shade of that season. Avant-garde details include the long jacket and polished leather trim on the pockets and hem.
