Saint Jerome in the Wilderness

Paris Bordone (Paris Pasqualino)

Italian (active Venice), 1500 - 1571

Venetian artists of the early 1500s were particularly attracted to subjects in which the landscape played an important role. Here, the story of Saint Jerome's wanderings seems an excuse to depict the changing effects of light in a stormy landscape. In the foreground is the lion that accompanied Jerome in gratitude for removing a thorn from its paw. The mysterious scene in the middle distance, a young man fleeing from a winged monster, has yet to be explained.
