Saint Mary Magdalene
Bergognone (Ambrogio di Stefano da Fossano)Italian (active Lombardy), documented 1481 - 1522
The penitent Mary Magdalene anointed the feet of Christ with oil and dried them with her hair; she is, therefore, often depicted with long, flowing hair and holding an ointment jar. Bergognone portrays her with the serene naturalism that became prevalent in his later style as a result of his contact with Leonardo da Vinci.
