This panel comes from a church outside Genoa dedicated to Saint Jerome (died 420). Genoa was one of the principal centers of the saint's cult in Italy. A favorite saint of the Renaissance humanist scholars, Jerome was revered for his learning. Although he never held an official position in the Roman Catholic Church, it has been common practice since the mid-1300s to show him in red cardinal's robes.
