Saint John the Baptist Pointing Out Christ as the Lamb of God

Master of the Saint John Altarpiece (Hugo Jacobsz.?)

Netherlandish (active Leiden and Gouda), first securely documented 1478, still active 1534

The scene illustrates the Gospel of John (1:35–7), which tells how John the Baptist and his followers met Jesus and his apostles. John exclaimed about Jesus, "Behold the Lamb of God!" The panel comes from an altarpiece painted for the church of Saint John in Gouda, near Rotterdam.
