Still Life with a Roemer

Willem Kalf

Dutch (active Amsterdam), 1619 - 1693

Willem Kalf contrasts the glistening seeds of a pomegranate on an elaborate silver platter atop a soft Smyrna (Turkish) carpet, showing his ability to capture optical effects. Behind the splendid roemer in the center is a type of tall wine glass that Kalf often included in his paintings, barely noticeable but for its reflections.
