Still Life with a Stoneware Jar and a Brazier

Jan Fris

Dutch (active Amsterdam), 1627 - 1672

A Westerwald jug of c. 1630, decorated with the coat of arms of Amsterdam, is shown on a table with a tall beer glass possibly used for communal drinking, playing cards, and pipe-smoking supplies. The jug would have served as a decanter for beer, and its presence within this composition evokes the place of stonewares in Dutch social life.
