Pomona
David Teniers IIFlemish (active Antwerp and Brussels), 1610 - 1690
The woman in this painting is Pomona, the Roman goddess of fruit trees. Teniers's copy of Palma il Giovane's painting was etched by Jan van Troyen, who was active in Brussels from 1633 to 1663. Teniers must have made his acquaintance while employed as the archduke's painter in that city. Van Troyen was one of the most important printmakers in the project, completing fifty-six etchings in the Theatrum Pictorium.
