Portrait of a Man

Bartel Bruyn the Elder was the leading protraitist in Cologne in the first half of the sixteenth century. This work, however, is in fact a copy after a 1536 portrait by Bruyn. Nevertheless, the copy's high quality and strong similarities in technique to authentic works by Bruyn suggest that it was made in the workshop of the artist or that of his son, Bartel the Younger.
