19th century
Osmington Bay
The unfinished state of this painting reveals Constable’s working methods. The sky is richly detailed, but the coastline and boats are outlined in pencil and given a light wash or “dead-coloring.” In keeping with contemporary practice, Constable often worked from the sky downward when finishing a picture.
