Gerbrand van den Eeckhout excelled as a painter of religious and historical subjects. This work depicts an event from the conquest of New Carthage (Cartagena in modern-day Spain) by the Roman general Scipio Africanus in which Scipio releases a former hostage to her fiancé. The treasures at Scipio’s feet are ransom offered by the woman’s parents, which the general in turn presented to the young couple as a wedding gift.
