Pâte-de-verre, a sculptural process in which small pieces of ground glass are placed in a mold and fired, creates translucent works with realistic coloring and lifelike qualities. Popular with the ancient Egyptians, the technique was revived in the early 1900s. Rodin experimented with the medium, using it for portraits of important women in his life.
