The Miracle of the Pool of Bethesda
Giovanni Domenico TiepoloItalian (active Venice, Würzburg, and Madrid) 1727 - 1804
The Gospels tell how Christ miraculously cured a paralyzed man by ordering: "Rise, take up thy bed, and walk" (John 5:8). The elaborate architectural background included in this painting may refer to a description in the gospel according to Saint John that situates the miracle at the pool of Bethesda in Jerusalem, a resort for the sick, and mentions that it was bordered with an elaborate colonnade.
