By 1735 the most popular motifs in European silk design were flowers and plants. In France, fabric designers trained in the art of flower painting. Asymmetrical patterning and mirror images help create a naturalistic feeling to this design, which features a stone arch with Rococo scroll ornamentation enclosing a view of a row of trees and blue sky, flanked by disproportionately sized flowers and plants. This silk was presumably used for church vestments.
