The painting depicted in this etching by Grimm was believed to be a self-portrait by the great Raphael Sanzio of Urbino (usually referred to simply as Raphael) until the late 1870s, when was it was identified as portraying Bindo Altoviti, a young banker in Florence. The portrait remained the property of Bavaria until 1936, when questions about the painting’s authenticity resulted in its sale and eventual acquisition by the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC. The attribution of the painting to Raphael and the identity of the sitter as Bindo Altoviti have been confirmed.
