"Impression in Form" Vase

Yasuhisa Kohyama’s unique sculptural style is derived from his awareness of beauty in nature blended with his great respect for the ceramic tradition in Japan. Born, raised, and working in Shigaraki, a town considered the Japanese “heartland” of ceramics, Kohyama creates powerful forms using the region’s extremely course Shigaraki clay. Impression in Form, one of his signature wind shapes, exemplifies the interplay of asymmetry and texture created by his distinctive cutting techniques, which reveal the stacked feldspathic clay layers that occur naturally in the clay body. Contained and tight, this sculpture resonates a silent energy from within.
