Augustin Amant Constant Fidèle EdouartFrench, 1789 - 1861
A prolific silhouette artist, Augustin Edouart came to Philadelphia in 1843 and made over 350 cuttings of local residents. To make a silhouette, he took a piece of paper, white on one side and black on the other, folded the black side in, sketched his subject's profile in pencil on the white side, and then cut out the shape. He was a master of detail, as evidenced here in his inclusion of the Lea family's toys, flower baskets, and walking sticks.
