Madame Le Comte and a lady friend visit the famous waterfall at Tivoli
Étienne de Lavallée-PoussinFrench, 1735 - 1802
In 1764 the wealthy collector, writer, and artist Claude-Henri Watelet arrived in Rome with his companion Marguerite Le Comte and his longtime teacher Abbé Copette. To commemorate their visit, the trio was presented with a small book of sonnets illustrated with etchings by students at the French Academy in Rome. Several of the etchings, including this one, show the tourists visiting important people, monuments, and sights in and around Rome.
