The Circumcision of Christ

Jacopo (Giacomo) Cestaro

Italian, 1718 - after 1778

Cestaro was a little-known artist from Naples whose personality as a draughtsman has gradually been teased out of obscurity by scholars, who have over the past several decades pieced together a consistent body of drawings attributable to him in museums all over Europe and America. He used a distinctively dense combination of chalk, ink, wash, and opaque watercolor to build up his tonal and atmospheric compositions.
