The medieval legend of Genoveva (or Genevieve) of Brabant, a virtuous bride falsely accused of being unfaithful, captured the imagination of generations of nineteenth-century Romantics. Her story furnished the plot of poems and plays and operas and was a popular subject with painters and printmakers. Here Ludwig Richter depicts the saintly heroine seated outside the forest cave where she raised her son with the help of friendly animals until being safely reunited with her husband.
