Boy's Shoes (Tsarouchia)

Artist/maker unknown

Pom-pommed shoes, worn by Greek mountain guerillas fighting for independence in the early nineteenth century, are still part of the full dress of Greek ceremonial guards. While nails usually stud the soles for traction, this miniature pair is merely decorated with metallic sequins.
