This goblet is engraved with a portrait of Jonathan Swift (1667–1745), dean of St. Patrick's Cathedral in Dublin as well as a poet, political pamphleteer, and author of the satirical masterpiece Gulliver's Travels. Swift, an Englishman who resided in Ireland, became a popular figure in that country through his writings in support of Irish causes. This portrait is based on a painting by Charles Jervas in the Bodleian Library, Oxford, England.
