Male Academy

Simon Charles Miger

French, 1736 - 1820

To hold difficult poses for long sessions, nude models in life-drawing classes at the Royal Academy would hold onto ropes, as seen here. To this day, students at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts continue the practice of working from the nude model, and a painted or drawn study of a nude is still called an "academy."
