Lucas Samaras

American (born Greece), 1936 - 2024

Samaras, who studied art at Rutgers University in New Brunswick, New Jersey, discovered Polaroid (dye diffusion process) film in 1969 and used it obsessively until about 1976. This late work is characteristic in Samaras's use of his own body as the subject and in his manipulation of the surface of the photograph during development, an approach that significantly altered the boundaries of color photography.
