Tobias and the Angel (The Small Tobias)
Hendrik GoudtDutch, 1585 - 1630
In the Old Testament story of Tobias and the Angel, the Archangel Raphael accompanies Tobias as he travels to distant lands to collect a debt for his blind father, Tobit. After Tobias kills a fish along the way, the archangel informs him that its organs can be used to cure his father's blindness. Here, Raphael gently guides Tobias across the stepping-stones of a river, with the fish safely tucked under his arm.
This print is one of seven that Hendrik Goudt engraved after Adam Elsheimer's small, jewel-like paintings on copper.
