Fortuna

Sebald Beham

German, 1500 - 1550

Beham depicted both classical and religious subjects throughout his career. In the print at left he employs several of the traditional symbols assigned to Fortuna, including a sheaf of wheat, globe, and wheel of fortune. Here a diminutive man enjoys good fortune at the top of the wheel and pleads with her to stop its turning.
