Kara Walker's bold installations of wall-sized black-and-white silhouettes address the complexity of interracial relationships during the Civil War era and present her perceptions of a continuing legacy of exploitation. The image in this print was adapted from a vast narrative cycle titled The Emancipation Approximation that was installed in the Carnegie International Exhibition in Pittsburgh in 1999.
