The sun breaks through the clouds after a storm, allowing wet mariners the chance to measure their location at noon (eight bells). Homer’s etching after his painting of this subject from 1886 offers an image of tranquility and human control to set against his views of disaster from this same decade. The original painting is in the collection of the Addison Gallery of American Art, Andover, Massachusetts.
