Man's University of Pennsylvania Sweater
Artist/maker unknownWhen competitive sports burgeoned in the late nineteenth century, participants from competing academic institutions started to distinguish themselves by adopting different colors. The first known use of red and blue for the University of Pennsylvania was in the 1870s, but the association was firmly entrenched by the time I. Wistar Morris wore this sweater as a student in 1896. Sweaters were a newly popular garment, especially suitable for athletes since they allowed for movement and were believed to beneficially open the pores.
