Open Oval Crumpled Form

Nicholas Arroyave-Portela

English, born 1972

Nicholas Arroyave-Portela’s wheel-thrown vessel evokes its maker’s fascination with water. Both the tactile, rippled surface and the play of light and color across the body allude to the changing effects of objects in and seen through water. Fascinated by shape, volume, and fullness, Arroyave-Portela creates this illusion by dimensionally modulating the surface of the vessel. The artist evokes shadows through the use of color, accentuating the crenulated surfaces.
