Balaam and the Angel

Dirk Volkertsz. Coornhert

Netherlandish, 1522 - 1590

When Maarten van Heemskerck visited Rome in the 1530s, he completed a wonderful series of drawings depicting antique ruins and sculpture. For the rest of his career, Heemskerck utilized both these sketches and his memories of Rome to supply his paintings and drawings with fantastic backgrounds of ruins. Many of Heemskerck's later drawings were produced as models for engravings, as was this representation of an Old Testament subject engraved by Coornhert.
