Exotic animals were first introduced to Japan by the Dutch through the port of Nagasaki in the early nineteenth century. This print records the 1821 arrival of two camels, which toured major cities around the country. Opportunities to import exotic animals increased dramatically after 1859, when Japan opened to international trade.
