Nude Man Seated Before a Curtain

Rembrandt Harmensz. van Rijn

Dutch, 1606 - 1669

The unassuming model for this image may have been a pupil or workshop assistant assigned to the task of posing for Rembrandt and his students during a figure-drawing session. Rembrandt chose to sketch the young man with an etching needle on a copper plate. Rather than idealizing aspects of the male physique, the artist focused on the natural features of the youth’s body to capture his personality.
