PietĂ  (The Christ of Caprarola)

Annibale Carracci

Italian, 1560 - 1609

Annibale Carracci took advantage of an accidental effect in the background of this print: the ground lifted partly when the plate was soaked in acid, causing wavy foul biting lines. He burnished these undulations away in some areas but left the m in the sky, suggesting the eerie flickering of a storm.
