Vasudeva Votive Cup

Artist/maker unknown

This small ritual object embodies the story of Krishna's first miracle. Just after Krishna's birth, his father, Vasudeva, snuck the infant out of the palace prison. As he bore the divine baby across the Yamuna River, the deep, rushing water threatened to overwhelm them. However, the moment Krishna's foot touched the water, it miraculously receded, allowing them safe passage. This votive cup has a strategically placed hole so when water is poured in to the level of the infant's foot, it "miraculously" recedes, replicating the divine salvation.
