The most ambitious early products of the Doccia porcelain factory---opened in 1737 by the Marchese Carlo Ginori---were its statues and figure groups based on ancient and modern sculptures. For the composition of these pieces, Ginori acquired casts and molds of statuettes made by prominent Florentine sculptors who had conceived the works as models for cast bronzes. Transformed into ceramic, this group retains all the drama of its late Baroque prototype.
