Woman's Dress: Bodice with Attached Overskirt, Dickey, and Skirt
John Redfern started as a ladies' tailor on the English Isle of Wight, but, with the help of his sons, soon expanded his business to London and Paris. This beautiful feather-trimmed dress, with its asymmetrical bodice and bustled skirt, shows the start of the early 1890s fashion for puffed sleeves. While the waistband is stamped with the coats of arms of two of Redfern's prestigious clients, the Queen of England and the Empress of Russia, it was made for a member or relative of the Yuengling family, operators of the famous Pottsville, Pennsylvania, brewery.
