The Annunciation

Girolamo Francesco Maria Mazzola, known as Parmigianino

Italian, 1503 - 1540

Parmigianino was one of the great pioneers of Italian etching and the first to take advantage of the spontaneity offered by the technique. Here, the quick strokes of the etching needle lend the scene an urgency expressive of the confusion and distress of the Madonna.
