Long Purse

A myriad of motifs decorate miser’s purses, ranging from depictions of animals and insects to flowering vines and geometric shapes, the latter two seen on this example. Many nineteenth-century historical revivals manifest themselves in the purse patterns as well, including Gothic-inspired representations of medieval church architecture and crosses. While purse designs were subject to contemporary trends, they ultimately expressed their makers’ tastes and abilities. In the October 1878 issue of Peterson’s Magazine, Mrs. Jane Weaver encouraged ladies to use their own judgment when constructing and styling a purse.
