Faced Fore reflects Daley’s connection to New Mexico and his continuing interest in geometric form. The artist came into direct contact with ancient Pueblo cliff dwellings and early Pueblo pottery while guest lecturing in New Mexico in 1971. This experience influenced an entirely new body of work that was architectonic in form and embellished with ribbed patterns and zigzags, recalling the motifs Daley had encountered in the southwest. The purposeful lack of glaze in Faced Fore exaggerates the organic properties of stoneware while the hard, raw surface emphasizes its permanency.
