Johann Heinrich Lips

Swiss, 1758 - 1817

Well schooled in classical art and ancient literature, Johann Heinrich Lips composed his Times of Day series as if illustrating a pastoral poem by Longus, a Greek poet of the second century CE. In Night, the artist depicts a toga-garbed shepherd and shepherdess seeking shelter with their flock.
