Two-Tiered Wardrobe (Jang)

The jang, one of the essential furniture types used for storage in Korea, can be categorized as a wardrobe, bookcase, or cupboard, depending on its contents. This jang was made as a wardrobe and would have been placed in a bedroom in the women's quarters. The height of such wardrobes vary according to the number of tiers, which usually range from one to three but can extend to four or five. The structure of this example is typical, with two tiers of boxlike spaces and four small drawers above. Veneer made from the Japanese pagoda tree (also know as the Chinese scholar tree) adorns the front.
