Mizusashi (Water Container)

Miyanohara Ken

Japanese, 1898 - 1977

Image 1 of 21 / 2

For this mizusashi, a hot-water container for the tea ceremony, Miyanohara looked to Chinese Cizhou-style stonewares for his inspiration. The piece was first coated with a thick brown glaze, which was then carved and scraped down to the clay body to form the grape motif. The simple, bold design is seen in silhouette, meandering in a double band around the circumference of the vessel against the matte surface of the lighter, beige-toned clay.
