Punchong Jar

Lee Kang Hyo

Korean, born 1961

In this work the artist successfully fuses two Korean ceramic practices popular during the Joseon dynasty (1392–1910). Its globular body reproduces the famous “moon shape” of that period, whereas the type of clay, the glaze, and the decoration are deeply rooted in the techniques used by buncheong ceramic artists of the 1400s and 1500s.

As seen in buncheong wares, Lee has applied a white liquid clay, called slip, to a stoneware body and scratched a pattern into the semidry surface, revealing the darker colored clay underneath.
