Herter Brothers, New York1865 - 1906
This chair is one of a set of eighteen made for the dining room of William H. Vanderbilt's mansion in New York City (now demolished). Its elaborate interior was probably the most important commission undertaken by the Herter Brothers firm. Each room had its own decorative scheme, with the dining room designed in the Renaissance Revival style of scrolling forms and symbols of abundance. Garlands of fruit and flowers are carved on the crest rail of this chair.
