Artistic Perspective
Anna Marie PavlikAmerican, born 1952
Pavlik’s inventive view of Texas and its surroundings—the Gulf of Mexico has been inserted between the South Texas and Mexican borders, and Arizona and New Mexico have been inverted, among other intentional inaccuracies—points not only to a lack of knowledge of geography among most people today, but also to how our perspective is influenced by our attachment to our primary location and personal experience. Pavlik also underscores the importance of artists’ contributions to Texas’s unique character by highlighting vignettes of sculptures located throughout the state, rather than featuring key cities.
