Autobiography: Past & Present I
Howardena PindellAmerican, born 1943
Pindell has worked in a remarkable range of media, including painting, printmaking, collage, video, film, and “process art.” In the early 1980s she started a series of paintings and installations on the theme of “autobiography,” exploring her experiences as an African American woman, scholar, world traveler, and political activist. She has lived and worked in Japan and India, and visited Africa, Asia, Europe, Latin America, and the Caribbean. Pindell often uses a variety of materials such as string, perfume, glitter, and postcards in her work, an approach suggested by the faux-collage elements of this print.
