Image 1 of 21 / 2

This bottle is decorated with plum flowers and bamboo, two of the “Four Gentlemen”—four plants (plum, orchid, chrysanthemum, and bamboo) that survive in inhospitable conditions and thus represent strength of character during hardship. To create this design, the potter applied white slip directly onto the bottle’s surface with a tubelike tool.
